Tsambika Beach

Nestled on the eastern coast of Rhodes, Tsambika Beach is a stunningly picturesque destination famous for its golden sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

This beach is not merely a haven for sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts but is also steeped in local lore and religious significance. According to tradition, the name ’Tsambika’ is derived from the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, housed in the small Byzantine monastery perched atop the nearby hill. This icon is believed to grant the blessings of fertility to childless couples who make the pilgrimage up the steep path to the monastery.

Historically, Tsambika Beach and its surrounding region have seen the rise and fall of various civilizations, each leaving its mark on the landscape. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to the Byzantine era, and through to the Knights of St. John, the area has played a significant role in the maritime and cultural transactions of the Aegean.

Today, Tsambika Beach attracts visitors not only for its natural beauty and warm, shallow waters but also for its vibrant local festivals and events which celebrate both its cultural heritage and the rich traditions of the Greek Orthodox faith. The feast of the Virgin of Tsambika, held annually on September 8th, sees a mix of devout pilgrimage and festive celebration, drawing both locals and tourists into a spirited blend of prayer, music, and communal festivities.
