The Casino of Rhodes

The Casino of Rhodes, set against the picturesque backdrop of the city, stands as a monumental beacon of architectural elegance and historical significance. Originating as the Grande Albergo Delle Rose, this structure was conceived by Mario Lago, the Italian commander of the Dodecanese, who aimed to transform Rhodes into a thriving tourist destination.

The luxurious hotel first opened its grand doors in 1927, quickly becoming one of the most opulent establishments in the Mediterranean, attracting a host of illustrious guests such as tycoon Aristotle Onassis, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and opera diva Maria Callas.

In 1929, the building began its storied life as a casino, thereby enhancing its allure to an international clientele and securing its place as a premier entertainment venue, though it could not claim the title of Greece’s first casino due to the political circumstance of Italian occupation at the time.

Throughout its operational years, the casino has been a silent witness to numerous historical events and societal shifts, particularly during the turbulent wartime periods. After a hiatus in the 1970s, the casino was rejuvenated and rebranded as Casino Rodos in 1999, embodying both the charm of old-world glamour and modern luxury.

Today, it not only offers gaming and entertainment but also serves as a historical landmark that narrates the rich, complex past of Rhodes through its majestic walls and refined ambience.

Located in the heart of Rhodes, the casino remains a focal point for both residents and tourists, especially during the bustling summer months. It offers free admission to guests staying at its associated luxury hotel, further cementing its status as a cornerstone of hospitality and grandeur on the island.
