Kallithea beach

Back to all places

Kallithea Beach, situated on the eastern coast of Rhodes Island, Greece, is not only renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and stunning natural beauty, but also for its rich historical significance. Originally known for its therapeutic springs, the area around Kallithea Beach was developed in 1928 during the Italian occupation of Rhodes. The Italians, recognizing the therapeutic properties of the springs, constructed an elaborate spa complex characterized by its unique blend of Arabic, Moroccan, and Roman architectural influences. This site drew visitors from across Europe, who were enticed by the healing properties of the waters and the exquisite beauty of the surroundings. During the Second World War, the spa’s significance as a health resort dimmed, and it fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until recent decades that the local government initiated restoration projects to return the spa complex to its former glory.

Today, Kallithea Beach is not only a popular destination for sunseekers and water sports enthusiasts but also attracts history buffs keen to explore the restored spa and admire its architectural beauty. The beach itself is lined with fine pebbles and sand, fringed by rocky coves that offer ideal spots for snorkeling and diving, revealing a vibrant underwater world. The surrounding region is dotted with lush Mediterranean vegetation, adding to the idyllic and picturesque setting that continues to enchant visitors, much like it did in the past. Kallithea Beach, with its combination of natural beauty and historical allure, stands as a testament to the cultural melting pot that is Rhodes Island.
