French Tower

The French Tower, standing majestically within the medieval walls of Rhodes City, is a silent witness to the epic historical saga of Rhodes.

Built during the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller, a group of knightly warriors dedicated to caring for the sick and injured in the Holy Land, this tower showcases the architectural prowess and strategic significance of the Knights in medieval times. Initially constructed as a crucial defense point against potential invasions, the French Tower has endured through centuries, encapsulating tales of bravery and resilience. During the siege of Rhodes in 1522 by the Ottoman Empire, the tower played a crucial defensive role. It is said that the knights held off the vastly superior Ottoman forces for months, showcasing their military might and tactical expertise. Throughout its existence, the French Tower has also housed various occupants, ranging from knights during the medieval period to different administrative bodies under Ottoman rule.

Legends swirl around the tower, including tales of hidden treasures left by the knights before they were finally driven out of Rhodes.

Restored meticulously in recent years, the tower today stands as a pivotal educational and cultural site, inviting visitors to delve deep into the rich historical tapestry of Rhodes—a city shaped by its myriad conquerors and their diverse influences.
