Butterflies Valley
Back to all places
Nestled on the enchanting island of Rhodes, Butterflies Valley, also known as Petaloudes, offers a unique natural spectacle that peaks during the late summer months, particularly from June to September.
This verdant and humid valley comes alive with the vibrant flutter of thousands of Jersey Tiger Moths, drawing visitors from across the globe. What makes this phenomenon truly spectacular is the moths’ attraction to the Oriental Sweetgum trees found in this region, whose aromatic resin is irresistible to the insects.
The valley, a protected natural park since it garnished attention in the early 20th century, holds vital ecological and biological significance. Scientific studies have clarified that these moths, during their adult phase, are in a state of reproductive diapause, contributing to their congregative behavior in the area.
The serene environment of the valley, coupled with its small streams and ponds, makes it not only a habitat for the Jersey Tiger Moths but also for other fauna including various endemic species of flora and fauna that are crucial to the biodiversity of Rhodes.
The valley also features a museum dedicated to its winged inhabitants, offering educational insights about the ecological dynamics of the valley, while various paths and wooden bridges lead visitors through the lush greenery and water features, enhancing the experience of connection with nature.
