Arnaldo Gate

Located in the heart of Rhodes, the ancient Kolona Gate stands as a testament to the island’s rich historical tapestry. Positioned strategically at Ermou 4, it was once part of a larger fortification system that protected the city from invading forces.

This gate dates back to the medieval era and has survived various sieges and occupations, reflecting a blend of different architectural influences over the centuries. One of the most dramatic events in its history occurred during the siege of 1522 when the Ottoman forces led by Suleiman the Magnificent laid claim to Rhodes. The Kolona Gate, due to its strategic position, played a pivotal role in the defense strategies of the Knights Hospitaller who ruled Rhodes at the time.

Legends say that the gate was the site of numerous fierce battles and skirmishes as the knights made their last stand to defend their city. Interestingly, the Kolona Gate is named after the single column that stands beside it, believed to be a remnant from the earlier Byzantine structures that once dominated the landscape. This solitary column adds a mystical aura, evoking images of a once-grand past. The gate’s architecture provides insights into medieval defensive strategies with features designed to withstand long sieges and brutal attacks.

Today, the Kolona Gate serves not just as a historical site but as a gateway to the past, offering visitors a glimpse into the medieval soul of Rhodes. It stands as a cultural landmark, telling stories of bravery, resilience, and architectural ingenuity that shaped the island through the ages. It is a must-visit for history buffs and travelers alike, promising an evocative journey back in time.
